RDO Liberty / Mitaka Set up for three Nodes (Controller+Network+Compute) ML2&OVS&VXLAN on CentOS 7.2

Update 11/02/2017

                                              It's hard to know what the right thing is.
                                             Once you know it's hard not to do it.
                                                 Harry Fertig (Kingsley,The Confession film 1999)

Currently "Views count" hit 5873 Please, be aware of in oncoming Newton RDO release you are supposed to see following output. Yes, it does work and in fact drops packstack as tool for production deployments ( storage.pp is missing ). No matter do you clearly understand what you are doing or don't.

[root@Server72CentOS templates]# pwd
/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/packstack/puppet/templates

[root@Server72CentOS templates]# ls -l
total 16
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 2204 Aug  9 12:33 compute.pp
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 5918 Aug  9 12:33 controller.pp
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 1516 Aug  9 12:33 network.pp

Further reading makes sense for RDO Mitaka, otherwise you may quit at this point and enjoy TripleO deployments on bare metal, which are supposed to make you really happy. Specifically when you would attempt VLAN  either DVR overcloud set up. I believe that in meantime RH actually forces people

shoot a gun on sparrows

presuming that customers ( RDO community members ) are not responsible
do decide on their own when to switch to TripleO ( TripleO QuickStart )  really providing huge benefits like PCS/Corosync HA Controller's cluster , automated deployment of Ceph cluster Nodes , i.e. invoking python-tripleoclient, in turn performing Overcoud's Heat Stack deployment on undercloud node as was pre-required, does make sense and when simple Controller+N*Compute+ Storage Cluster might be painlessly deployed by packstack with no IPMI
requirements for boxes on landscape.

Per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intelligent_Platform_Management_Interface

The Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) is a set of computer interface specifications for an autonomous computer subsystem that provides management and monitoring capabilities independently of the host system's CPU, firmware (BIOS or UEFI) and operating system. IPMI defines a set of interfaces used by system administrators for out-of-band management of computer systems and monitoring of their operation. For example, IPMI provides a way to manage a computer that may be powered off or otherwise unresponsive by using a network connection to the hardware rather than to an operating system or login shell.

UPDATE 06/01/2016

 Currently "Views count" hit 2522. Been written on 10/22/2015 ( just after RDO
 Liberty release ) this post obviously stays out of all my other writings.

 Another post RDO Liberty DVR Neutron workflow on CentOS 7.2
http://dbaxps.blogspot.com/2015/10/rdo-liberty-rc-dvr-deployment.html
hit "Views count" 2127 been written on 10/11/2015.

 Actually, I see only one important point. This post clearly explains how external
OVS bridge br-ex and corresponding port eth2 are supposed to be configured
on Network or Controller/Network Node to provide inbound/outbound connectivity .

I have to notice that in meantime packstack does support ML2&OVS&VLAN
deployments on RDO Mitaka and RDO Liberty. On Mitaka following block is responsible for correct VLAN configuration on Compute Nodes, assuming
that eth1 is responsible for Controler/Network && Compute Node vlan
vm/data connectivity

Regarding Triple0 pro and cons see :-
http://alesnosek.com/blog/2016/03/27/tripleo-installer-the-good/
 I share official opinion regarding Triple0 to become a core tool for prod
 deployments. See :-
    The core issue for RDO packstack on production is disability to set up 3 Node HA Controllers. But finally this problem is supposed to be solved via Triple0

UPDATE 01/23/2015

Adding new Compute Node to Cluster && Getting EXCLUDE_SERVERS to work

See https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1254389
Issue already seems to be fixed for RDO Liberty.
Check installed version of openstack-packstack , download
openstack-packstack-7.0.0-0.7.dev1661.gaf13b7e.el7.src.rpm

I was able rebuild mentioned src.rpm with patch

Afterwards you should be able cleanly add new node to cluster, using CONFIG_NEUTRON_OVS_TUNNEL_SUBNETS as comma-separated list of subnets (for example, 192.168.10.0/24,192.168.11.0/24)  used for sending tunneling packets.

Works for me. Fisrt deployment done with
     CONFIG_NEUTRON_OVS_TUNNEL_SUBNETS=12.0.0.0/24

Adding Compute Node 192.169.142.137

END UPDATE

As advertised officially
 In addition to the comprehensive OpenStack services, libraries and clients, this release also provides Packstack, a simple installer for proof-of-concept installations, as small as a single all-in-one box and RDO Manager an OpenStack deployment and management tool for production environments based on the OpenStack TripleO project

  In posting bellow I intend to test packstack on Liberty to perform classic three
node deployment.  If packstack will succeed then post installation  actions  like VRRP or DVR setups might be committed as well. One of the real problems for packstack is HA Controller(s) setup. Here RDO Manager is supposed to get a significant advantage, replacing with comprehensive CLI a lot of manual configuration.

   Following bellow is brief instruction  for three node deployment test Controller&&Network&&Compute for RDO Liberty, which was performed on Fedora 22 host with KVM/Libvirt Hypervisor (16 GB RAM, Intel Core i7-4790  Haswell CPU, ASUS Z97-P ) Three VMs (4 GB RAM,4 VCPUS)  have been setup. Controller VM one (management subnet) VNIC, Network Node VM three VNICS (management,vtep's external subnets), Compute Node VM two VNICS (management,vtep's subnets)

SELINUX stays in enforcing mode.

I avoid using default libvirt subnet 192.168.122.0/24 for any purposes related
with VM serves as RDO Liberty Nodes, by some reason it causes network congestion when forwarding packets to Internet and vice versa.

Three Libvirt networks created

2. Second Libvirt subnet "public" serves for simulation external network  Network Node attached to public,latter on "eth2" interface (belongs to "public") is supposed to be converted into OVS port of br-ex on Network Node. This Libvirt subnet via bridge virbr2 172.24.4.225 provides VMs running on Compute Node access to Internet due to match to external network created by packstack installation 172.24.4.224/28.

  1. Hi can you explain the initial network configurations in details. . . I'm stuck with that. . . .

  4. Hello,

    Tried to add a new compute node to this 3 node setup of yours. But got following error on packstack

    Adding Neutron API manifest entries [ ERROR ]

    ERROR : "Couldn't detect ipaddress of interface eno50332184 on node 192.169.142.147"

    .147 is my network node

    Added two following lines to answer file (.117 is my new compute node)

    EXCLUDE_SERVERS=192.169.142.127,192.169.142.137,192.169.142.147
    CONFIG_COMPUTE_HOSTS=192.169.142.137,192.169.142.117

    eno50332184 is my vteps interface.

    I think the reaosn for this is that we created changed ifcfg-br-ex manually and set it to external network IP but couldn't find a way to add new compute node or to solve this problem

  5. it seems a bug https://ask.openstack.org/en/question/79980/packstack-complains-of-not-being-able-to-detect-ipaddress-of-interface/

  6. See https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1254389
    Issue already seems to fixed on RDO Liberty.
    Check installed version of openstack-packstack , download
    openstack-packstack-2015.2-0.1.dev1654.gcbbf46e.el7.src.rpm
    ( most probably this version but might be a later one).
    I was able rebuild mentioned src.rpm with patch
    https://review.openstack.org/#/c/257033/. Then `yum reinstall ..` packstack rpms . Afterwards you should be able cleanly add new node to cluster.

  7. @rhceturkiye,
    I've addressed your question in blog post body with working urls. Will test patch myself as time permits.

  8. i think your new answer (to conform to your original article) should be:

    Adding Compute Node 192.169.142.157

    EXCLUDE_SERVERS=192.169.142.127,192.169.142.137,192.169.142.147
    CONFIG_DEBUG_MODE=n
    CONFIG_CONTROLLER_HOST=192.169.142.127
    CONFIG_COMPUTE_HOSTS=192.169.142.157,192.169.142.137
    CONFIG_NETWORK_HOSTS=192.169.142.147

    I still get the same error though. Applied 0003 patch (have seen it applied with grep command)

  9. adding

    CONFIG_NEUTRON_OVS_TUNNEL_SUBNETS=192.169.142.0/24

    line solved my problem. That is

    Adding Compute Node with the IP of 192.169.142.157

    EXCLUDE_SERVERS=192.169.142.127,192.169.142.137,192.169.142.147
    CONFIG_DEBUG_MODE=n
    CONFIG_CONTROLLER_HOST=192.169.142.127
    CONFIG_COMPUTE_HOSTS=192.169.142.157,192.169.142.137
    CONFIG_NETWORK_HOSTS=192.169.142.147
    CONFIG_NEUTRON_OVS_TUNNEL_SUBNETS=192.169.142.0/24

    solved it..

    1. That is correct. Update doesn't match main body IPs
      allocation.

      Delete
  10. You are using same network for MGMT and VTEPs nets .
    It's OK for POC and unacceptable for prod.
    CONFIG_NEUTRON_OVS_TUNNEL_SUBNETS should always point
    to VTEPs network.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Oh yes my mistake thanks for notification.. It should be like

    CONFIG_NEUTRON_OVS_TUNNEL_SUBNETS=10.0.0.0/24

    This mistake can be fixed with running

    packstack --answer-file=/root/answer.txt

    again? I always wondered that.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Try assign VTEPs IPs && rerun packstack. Actually ,
    packstack doesn't do much harm, but ovewrite configuration
    files. In this case I would verify /etc/neutron/ml2/plugins/openvswitch_agent.ini ( local_ip should be from 10.0.0.0/24)
